Our house – specifically the theater room – is a natural gathering spot for big television events. The Super Bowl is certainly no exception.
It started as a simple question from a close friend a month or so back: “Are you guys going to have a Super Bowl Party?” And our reply was, of course, “I guess we can.”
And so it began. We’d meant to hold it to a few close friends and neighbors but then found out the sailing club was hosting a “sail trim” clinic from 12-3. It made sense to invite them all here, too, didn’t it? We asked that partiers bring an appetizer to share and whatever they wanted to drink; since all of these people have been to parties at our house before, they knew the drill.
In fact, we had one couple (sailing club folks) stop by with a big bowl of their special hot wings. Not so strange under usual circumstances but here’s the thing…these people weren’t even coming to the party. They just knew we all loved their version of hot wings and thought they’d drop some by for us. How incredible is that? And let me tell you, those hot wings were great! I always kid Glenn that I’m going to hide the hot wings during the party and will bring them out after everyone’s left…that’s how good they are and how much I'd love to have the whole bowl to myself. So, kudos to Glenn and Lauren…great people, happy sailors and tremendous hot wing chefs!
The attendees were the usual cast of sailing club characters along with a few other friends who actually know most of the sailing crew from other parties we’ve hosted. There were, I think about 16 of us, give or take 2 or 4.
The food, well, the food was fantastic…there was fresh guacamole and dipping chips, individual chili-filled and artichoke-filled tarts, bite-sized cabbage rolls (pigs-in-the-blankets to those of us from ND), large platters of wonderful assortments of veggies and olives, and of course, a couple variety of wings; the hot wings I’ve already discussed and another teriyaki version that was oh-so-good! In addition, there were multiple varieties of flavored humus with pita chips for dipping – wow.
I’m quite sure most of it wasn’t on the Weight Watchers plan but then, Super Bowl – and Super Bowl food – only comes once a year – right?
I can’t say I watched the whole game. I’m not really into football. Instead, a few of the wives caught up on life upstairs in the great room. Randy did watch the game and had picked the Steelers as his team – looks like he made the right choice! The rest of the group was backing Arizona so there was lots of cheering and yelling throughout the game.
We did go downstairs at halftime to see Bruce sing. By that time, enough “cheer” had been spread throughout our crowd that a couple of people actually started dancing…The Boss does that to people!
So, it was a good game and a good party.
The thing is, the friend who posed the original question of whether we were having a party…well, he was a no-show. Too bad…he missed a great party!
